With his admission to the Academy of Fine Arts, a new circle of friends forms, and Walter meets his first wife, daughter of the Jewish industrialist Max Liewen, Elisabeth Liewen (1897 – 1949), whom he marries on May 12 in 1919. The couple moves to Ilmenauer Staße 9b in Berlin-Schmargendorf, in direct vicinity to the spacious villa quarters in Berlin-Grunewald. Max Liewen is the owner of three estates in Grunewald: a stately residence, still existing, at Winkler Straße 4 with access to the lake (Koenigssee) where he lives with his family until 1933; one half of a duplex mansion at Erdener Staße 5 (Walter Schulze-Mittendorff will be moving to this address 39 years later), and a garden plot of one hectare at Erbacher Straße, at the corner of Niersteiner Straße.
